gilles peterson Presents Havana Cultura is the latest bid by an overshadowed younger generation to compete with the Buena Vista Social Club’s titanic legacy. These two discs combine existing contemporary recordings with jams and covers laid down in a five-day session, with production by DJ Peterson and Social Club graduate and pianist Roberto Fonseca. The material ranges through Afro-Cuban jazz, rootsy rumbas, R&B, hip hop and jazz-rap to reggaeton. The players have youthful zest, but they have still some catching up to do. Jon Lusk
