The Finnish musician will take on the principal guest conductor role from July this year, and she will make her debut at the BBC Proms. She has led the orchestra a handful of times before, making her debut in 2018.

'From when we first met in May 2018 at a Maida Vale studio concert, I felt directly a mutual connection with the musicians,' says Stasevska. 'The BBC Symphony Orchestra is a very inspiring, energetic orchestra with a huge range of colours in its sound, and I am looking forward to working together over the next few years.'

Stasevska studied at the Royal Swedish Academy with Jormu Panula and at the Sibelius Academy with Leif Segerstam, and worked as assistant conductor to Esa-Pekka Salonen and Paavo Järvi.

She has previously conducted the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Opera North, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic and Gothenburg Symphony.

The role of principal guest conductor at the BBC Symphony Orchestra has been unfilled since 2012, and Stasevska will join the current conducting team of chief conductor Sakari Oramo, conductor laureate Andrew Davies and Günter Wand conducting chair Semyon Bychkov.
